Hazardous Bisphenol-A Embedded, The Far-Reaching Effects Of BPA Are Unknown
A recent article about the FDA reversing itself on the safety of bisphenol-A [1] echoes concerns I wrote about this chemical compound in December 2007 ("Lexan, Bisphenol-A and the Big Berky water filter" [2] )

Anyone who uses products that contact food or drink made with flexible plastic should give some thought to the bisphenol-A issue. This includes all types of soda, soft and drink bottles, but there is much more to it. It just might be that bispenol-A might be among the silent pathogens in our environment, responsible for the increase in cancer cases. Smoking has greatly decreased, but cancer has not. Science would logically indicate that in our environment must be either new carcinogens, or the public is increasingly exposed to more existing carcinogens.

What I had not considered in my article written in 2007 about Lexan and other plastic products was the impact that a bisphenol-A ban will have on numerous other plastic products. Hospitals and doctor offices generate a staggering amount of medical waste every day all around the world. Disposable plastics are a required medical evil in this era of endless communicable diseases.  read the full story here ...

Use of Potentially Harmful Chemicals Kept Secret Under Law
Of the 84,000 chemicals in commercial use in the United States -- from flame retardants in furniture to household cleaners -- nearly 20 percent are secret, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, their names and physical properties guarded from consumers and virtually all public officials under a little-known federal provision.

The policy was designed 33 years ago to protect trade secrets in a highly competitive industry. But critics -- including the Obama administration -- say the secrecy has grown out of control, making it impossible for regulators to control potential dangers or for consumers to know which toxic substances they might be exposed to. read the full story here ...

Oops: Backscatter x-ray machines "tear apart DNA"
The latest airport security trend is the backscatter x-ray machine, touted as a powerful way to virtually frisk a traveler for contraband without the embarassment of a strip search.

Though touted as completely safe because the level of radiation is so low, travelers have been nervous about the devices -- and not just because it shows off a nice outline of their privates to the people manning the machines -- but because they remain scared of the health problems they might propose.  read the full story ...

No Deaths From Vitamins or Minerals
(OMNS, October 14, 2009) There was not even one death caused by a vitamin or dietary mineral in 2007, according to the most recent statistics available from the U.S. National Poison Data System. The 132-page annual report of the American Association of Poison Control Centers published in the journal Clinical Toxicology shows zero deaths from multiple vitamins; zero deaths from any of the B vitamins; zero deaths from vitamins A, C, D, or E; and zero deaths from any other vitamin. (1)

Furthermore, there were zero deaths in 2007 from any dietary mineral supplement. This means there were no fatalities from calcium, chromium, zinc, colloidal silver, selenium, iron, or multimineral supplements. There was one death from chronic overdose of magnesium hydroxide, commonly known as the laxative/antacid milk of magnesia, and it was inappropriately listed in the "dietary supplement" reporting category. Nutritional supplements do not contain magnesium hydroxide.  read the full story ...

The Mercury Mischief: As Obama Warns of Hazards, The FDA Approves Mercury Dental Fillings
The 2008 Obama/Biden Plan for a Healthy America stressed preventive approaches to disease, including the reduction of toxins to which the body is exposed; and chief among these toxins was mercury. The Plan stated as a fundamental goal:

Reduce Risks of Mercury Pollution. More than five million women of childbearing age have high levels of toxic mercury in their blood, and approximately 630,000 newborns are born at risk every year. The EPA estimates that every year, more than one in six children could be at risk for developmental disorders because of mercury exposure in the mother's womb.

When mercury amalgam made the news on July 29, 2009, however, it was not to warn of its hazards. Rather, it was to report the FDA's surprise ruling that mercury fillings are safe. read the full story ...

Ten Things That Are Missing from Obama's Health Care Reform Debate

You can't fix one broken system by replacing it with another broken system. Sure, the current health care system of "that's a pre-existing condition" insurance companies, employer-funded health insurance and miserable Medicaid is a public health disaster, but if we're going to fix the system, we have to come up with something that actually addresses the root cause of disease in America.

The current health care reform debate in Washington is really just a distraction -- a ploy to keep everyone focused on all the wrong topics while quietly refusing to talk about the big issues that threaten the health of an entire nation.

Here are the top 10 things missing from Obama's health care reform plan (and often absent from the debate):

#1) Ending the FDA's suppression of natural cures and safe, effective nutritional supplements. read the full story ...

Healthy Food Obsession Sparks Rise in New Eating Disorder
Eating disorder charities are reporting a rise in the number of people suffering from a serious psychological condition characterised by an obsession with healthy eating.

The condition, orthorexia nervosa, affects equal numbers of men and women, but sufferers tend to be aged over 30, middle-class and well-educated.

The condition was named by a Californian doctor, Steven Bratman, in 1997, and is described as a "fixation on righteous eating". Until a few years ago, there were so few sufferers that doctors usually included them under the catch-all label of "Ednos" – eating disorders not otherwise recognised. Now, experts say, orthorexics take up such a significant proportion of the Ednos group that they should be treated separately.

Former HP Hood Farmers Call for Boycott
Several Maine organic dairy farmers are calling for a nationwide boycott of all HP Hood products, including the Stonyfield brand of organic milk, to call attention to what they say are unfair business practices.

Citing the economy, Hood declined to renew dairy contracts of about eight Maine farmers in February. Later, the company sent terminations to two additional farmers, Mark McKusick and Richard Lary. The McKusicks claim the company is dropping farmers who complain, and officials of the Northeast Organic Dairy Producers Alliance say Hood is making it difficult for organic dairy farmers to stay in business.

"It is immoral," said Ed Maltby, executive director of the Northeast Organic Dairy Producers Alliance, one of several groups advocating on behalf of the farmers. "You have seen Organic Valley and Horizon, who are suffering as well, but they have honored the contracts and agreements." read the full story ...

FDA has Issued the Final Regulation on Dental Amalgam (silver mercury fillings)
The FDA reclassification moves dental amalgams from low risk (Class I) to moderate risk (Class II). Many dentists have already abandoned dental amalgam fillings, perhaps ringing the death knell for mercury fillings.

In 1976 the FDA was given broad powers to regulate medical devices. But certain devices in use prior to that year, including the dental mercury/silver/amalgam filling (hereafter referred to as a mercury filling), were termed “pre-amendment devices.” Although the FDA had separately classified the elemental mercury and the metal powder alloy parts of the mercury filling, for years there was no regulation of the combination of the two, which was in common use in U.S. dental offices (75 percent of fillings in Americans’ mouths presently contain mercury).  read the full story ...
