An excellent high-end blender that consistently produces smooth blends. We use it mostly for nut (and seed) milk smoothies, raw whole grain (soaked) cereals, and making fresh flour from whole grains.

While it took a little while to get used to the programmable buttons, we love being able to produce consistent blends at the touch of a button (and the auto shut-off prevents us from over-blending).

The friction from the blender tends to heat the ingredients which can result in loss of nutrition. Simply add ice or freeze some of your ingredients to keep your blend cool (unless of course you're aiming for a warm blend such as soup).

Suitable for making 2-3 cups of flour at a time and is as simple as adding whole grains and blending. We keep our whole grains in the freezer to minimize the amount of heat produced. For making larger quantities of flour on a regular basis a dedicated flour mill is preferable.

The VitaMix 5000 is also an excellent blender and is only available directly from the manufacturer's website (use code 06-002105 to receive free shipping).

We like the zero learning curve of the VitaMix (with its speed control and plunger) and the stow-away power cord. However, we prefer the Blendtec's hands-free operation and smaller appliance size. Note that both models are loud!

Through normal use, we’ve broken both the Blendtec and VitaMix blenders. In both cases the warranty covered repairs and service was prompt and friendly. As part of the repair, our Blendtec HP3 model was upgraded to the HP3A model.

Soaking and Sprouting:
To soak seeds, nuts, or grains cover them completely in purified water overnight or for at least eight hours. The next morning (or after eight hours) pour them into a colander and rinse thoroughly. The nuts, seeds, or grains are then usable in recipes. Drain and store lightly covered in the refrigerator. Soaking and sprouting seeds, nuts, and grains increases digestibility and nutritional value.

Nut Milk:
¼ cup soaked almonds
2 fresh pitted dates
1½ cups water/ice

Blend until smooth. Use honey or any natural sweetener for variety.

Vanilla Smoothie:
2 frozen bananas
¼ cup soaked almonds
1 cup of water/ice
5 fresh pitted dates
1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

Blend until smooth.

Raw Oatmeal:
2 cups of soaked oat groats or buckwheat groats (whole grains)
3 bananas
1 cup of water/ice
2 cups fresh pitted dates

Blend until thick and smooth. Add chopped apples, chopped almonds, raisins and cinnamon for variety. Replace bananas with frozen berries and use � cup of water for variety.
