The “I Don’t Feel Like Working Out” Workout

If you’ve ever avoided exercising while knowing it would be really beneficial, try the following pre-workout. It takes very little effort and can make you feel good about working out without having to do any “exercise”. The pre-workout also frees us from any and all expectations that the word “exercise” may conjure up.
  1. Find a comfortable workout space free of interruptions. This could be at home, simply the usual place where you work out, or anywhere you won't feel self-conscious doing a pre-workout.
  2. On an exercise mat or padded floor (or any comfortable space), simply lie down and take a few deep breaths.
  3. Take a minute to visualize the state you'd like to be in after your pre-workout. Imagine your body (relaxed, supple, balanced), your emotions (safe, present, appreciated), your mental state (calm, aware, open). Feel free to create your own visualization and add any aspect that is important to you.
  4. Then let go of that image and trust that it will subtly guide you.
  5. Now, allow yourself the freedom to do what ever it is that feels good in each moment. You may simply lie there, or be motivated to stretch lightly, or massage and arm or leg. Whatever it is, allow your feelings and thoughts to follow. Remember, there is nothing you need to do – just follow your natural instincts. Continue for as long or as short a time as feels appropriate.
You should find that even after a few minutes that you’ll simply feel "better." If you're not up to a full workout, than consider giving yourself a break. Sometimes you'll feel refreshed enough to continue with your workout (or even do an abbreviated version). Whatever you decide, try to base that decision on what's best for you in the moment and not on expectations.
